A Harlot's Progress

It is interesting that the translation for the drawing can differ with the way where characters are pointing, or the body balance the character is leaning for.

When I did not know what Harlot'meaningng, I thought the character is a mom who is sending her daughter to a boarding school. Because their dress code didn't seem poor, and the old man's face seems really kind to me. I was quite shocked when I knew he is actually not a really good person. And also I thought the stuff in the drawing could be the daughter's movings. So I was really sure about the idea before the class goes on and I get the true idea of what is going on with the drawings. It was hard to predict the drawings without any knowledge on it. I didn't know the man was actually a rapist, and one who's riding a horse is a clergyman. It's all because I don't know about their dress code and culture. I definitely did not know the man is looking for a job, because I really could not barely saw he is holding a paper. It was too small to notice!  

Next drawing, I confess I didn't see anything. I even did not notice there a monkey in the scene. While the class is discussing the monkey, I was still like, "So what is the monkey anyway...?" And I miss the story to understand. 

After that is like a women's room? I get the idea that she is maybe working in the room and the males are her guest. But still, I was not paying attention to the box that could be illegal stuff that her guests make her keep it for a while. 

I missed the next drawings. It was too fast to take the notes with all of them. I am really bad at getting stories from drawing overall!

Harlot의 뜻이 그런 것인 줄 몰랐을 때에는 딸을 기숙학교에 보내는 엄마라고 생각했다. 옷차람이 가난해보이지 않았고 늙은 노인의 표정이 인자하게 느껴졌기 때문이다. 그리고 옆에 떨어져 있는 짐들이 여자의 짐인가? 싶은 생각이 있기도 했다. 배경 지식이 없기 때문이다. 수업이 진행되어가며 그런 게 아니란 소리를 들었지만 결국 이 이미지에서 여성은 시골에서 막 올라온 이노센트 아가씨라는 사실을 유추할 수 있다. 배경지식이 없는 상태에서 보면 전부 이해하기 힘든 그림이다. 나는 뒤의 인물이 여자들을 강강하고 다니는 귀족인 것을 몰랐고 말을 타고 있는 사람의 복장이 Clergyman 복장인 것도 몰랐다. 그리고 성직자가 등 뒤에서 매춘의 번죄가 일어나고 있는 걸 무시하고 있다는 사실은 해설을 듣고 나서야 겨우 떠올려냈다. 그가 직업을 구하고 있다는 사실은 더 알기 힘들었다. 들고 있다는 종이가 너무 작았으니까!

다음 그림은 솔직히 거의 이해를 못 했다. 원숭이가 있는지도 알아차리지 못했다. 무엇보다 여전히 어떤 게 원숭이지..? 하고 보고 있었고. 뒤의 사람들이 뭘 하고 있는지 왜 갑자기 원숭이가 나왔는지도 잘 이해하지 못했지만 이미 지나가 벌렸으니까!

다음 그림은 아마도? 여자의 방인 것 같은데 거기에서 일을 하고 있고 뒤에 들어오는 남자들이 손님인가 정도의 생각만 했다. 역시나 침대 위의 상자가 높으신 귀족 손님이 맡긴 불법적인 물건일 거라는 것은 몰랐다. 참 복잡한 것 같다….

그 뒤의 그림들은 너무 휙휙 지나가서 모르겠지만 갑자기 장례식이 나온 것을 보아 여자가 죽은 것인가…? 나는 아직 그림에서 스토리를 유추해나가는 능력은 적은 것 같다!
