The Arrival by Shaun Tan
Though I liked the book and it's silence mood a lot. It almost feels like I am watching a black and white old movie. Graphic of the novel was very well drawn and because every bit has fully described scenes, I could understand the story without showing any words.
The unique concepts that the book has was very special. Showing every small and usual detail of everyday life of the world on the drawings, they helped the reader to understand the whole world inside the book not only the main character and the story. It is shown right after the main character, the man comes into the new town. There are four drawings a page, showing other peoples in town doing what they do in life, selling and doing works, playing. If the audience has enough sense of observation and paid attention to the drawings, they might understand the story in full.
However, I was surely misguided in some shots too. I am not good at reading things and guessing, so I get often distracted with small and not important things, and then get lost with the story. I think it could happen in those types of novels a lot. Because every people saw different things in one drawing differ by their culture, knowledge of own, and type. Like the huge creatures inside the book, some could saw them as a peaceful and wonderful creature, and some of them really do, but maybe my friend could saw them scary because they are not used to her.
Words in comics or graphic novel help the audience to catch up with a story. It is very fascinating that we could experience a whole new world only through with images but at the same time, adding up some words could be an easy way to get the audience's attention and make the story clear.
